Laser honing technology improves engine performance

Laser honing technology is a new type of engine block processing technology. The surface roughness of the parts can reach Ra0.05 through laser honing technology, which can effectively reduce the friction loss between the moving pairs. It is of great significance to use laser honing technology in cylinder bore processing to verify whether the engine cylinder bore can increase engine power, torque and reduce fuel consumption under improved lubrication conditions and the friction coefficient of the moving friction pair is reduced...
 
Laser honing technology uses laser technology to etch tiny oil storage tanks on the surface of the cylinder bore, and achieves a mirror effect on the cylinder bore through the honing process. At present, this technology has been used in the engine production of Yantai General Motors in 2009. The Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has also conducted research on it for many years and has basically mastered laser etching technology.

According to the analysis of the engine cylinder bore and piston lubrication principle, the tiny oil storage tank between the cylinder bore inner wall surface can form a minimum thickness of dynamic pressure lubricating oil film between the cylinder bore and the piston, reducing the direct contact between the piston ring and the cylinder bore inner wall. Laser etching technology uses a laser beam to carve continuous and uniform grooves with a certain density (spacing), width, depth, angle, and shape on the inner wall of the honed cylinder bore for storing and transporting lubricating oil, thereby providing a surface structure that is conducive to the formation of hydrodynamic lubrication conditions, effectively solving the shortcomings of traditional honing processes that make it difficult to accurately control the texture and roughness of the cylinder bore surface, and meeting the production requirements of high-performance engines.
 
At present, laser honing technology generally requires four processes of rough honing, semi-finish honing, laser etching and fine honing, as follows:
 
(1) Rough honing: Using large-grained sand bars, the removal efficiency is high, and the shape accuracy of the cylinder bore can be initially corrected;
 
(2) Semi-precision honing: Use medium-grained sand strips to further correct the shape accuracy of the cylinder bore and ensure dimensional accuracy;
 
(3) Laser etching: Use laser technology to cut an oil storage tank of a specific size on the surface of the cylinder bore;
 
(4) Fine honing: remove the sintered material produced after laser honing to ultimately ensure the surface roughness of the cylinder bore.
